FREE MAKER WORKSHOP & POP-UP STORE JUNE 8TH AT LA DESIGN CENTER SUPPORTS CRIMINAL JUSTICE ORGANIZATION REFOUNDRY
Justice-impacted entrepreneurs share craft expertise while attendees of all ages create home furnishings sold to the public, with proceeds going to the non-profit.
[May 23, 2019, Los Angeles, CA] On the morning of Saturday, June 8th, Los Angeles design guru Cisco Pinedo, creator of MADE in LA and CEO of Cisco Brothers and Cisco Home, will be hosting a special maker workshop at the award-winning LA Design Center in support of Refoundry, an innovative non-profit in criminal and economic justice that Mr. Pinedo co-founded.
Refoundry trains formerly incarcerated people to repurpose discarded materials into home furnishings, and mentors them into their own businesses or career-track jobs. "When you develop a craft there is no limit to the value you can create," says Mr. Pinedo. "And nothing can take that away from you. I know from personal experience that you can build your own future with your hands.” Mr. Pinedo, a Mexican immigrant, started his furniture business in his South Central garage in the early 1990s, and now employs nearly 300 people.
Fun for all ages, Refoundry Workshops bring together local artisans, designers, criminal justice advocates, business/municipal leaders, and members of the LA community to experience a micro-version of the Refoundry craft and entrepreneurship program. Completed pieces are available for sale, with proceeds going toward the launch of Refoundry’s next LA cohort, launching Summer 2019.
